Jumping the waves with a jet ski can be lots of fun, but there are a few
things to keep in mind before you launch. In addition to those listed
below please do not operate a vehicle of any kind under the influence of
drugs or alcohol. For additional information please contact individual

Duck

Personal
watercraft may be operated in the sound from 9:00am – 6:00pm by persons 16 years
or older.
Personal
watercraft may enter the sound straight in and straight out within
900 feet from the shoreline and must do so at a speed no faster than
necessary to maintain control, but not causing a wake or exceeding 5
miles per hour.
Once launched,
personal watercraft should be kept at least 900 feet from all sound
and ocean shorelines.
Personal
watercraft are not permitted on ocean
beaches.
Southern Shores

Town personal
watercraft permit and proof of personal
watercraft insurance required; minimum age of 16 to operate
watercraft.
Once launched,
personal watercraft must maintain a distance of 200 yards or greater
from ocean shoreline and a distance of 400 yards or greater from
sound shoreline.
Personal
watercraft may only be operated during daylight hours, sunrise to
sunset.
Boater safety
course required, and is available online through the coast guard.
Kitty Hawk

Launching
engine-powered watercraft from Kitty Hawk beaches is prohibited.
Personal
watercraft must maintain a distance of 500 feet or greater from the
ocean shoreline.
Kill Devil Hills

Once launched,
personal watercraft must maintain a distance of 300 feet or greater
from the shoreline (sound or ocean) and fishing piers.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Personal
watercraft are prohibited from launching
and landing from all accesses, land or water areas controlled by the
National Park Service.
Operation of
personal watercraft is prohibited on all waters extending 150 feet
into the soundside waters.
