Town Regulations

Individual towns and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore have their own restrictions pertaining to pets. As always, please remember to be courteous and clean up after your pet.

Duck

Dogs are required to be vaccinated for rabies, collared and controlled by a leash or restraint. The exception to this is on the beach, where dogs are permitted to play unleashed. As a matter of public safety and courtesy, dogs on the beach should be under the watchful eye and control of the owner.

Southern Shores

No dogs allowed on the beach from May 15 - September 15. Year-round leash law. Owners must clean up after dogs. Law strictly enforced.

Kitty Hawk

No pets allowed on beach from May 15 - September 15. From September 16 - May 14, dogs must be restrained on a leash not exceeding 6 feet in length. Owners must clean up after their dogs.

Kill Devil Hills

Dogs are allowed on the beach from mid-September to mid-May. Dogs aiding the handicapped are allowed year-round. All pet waste must be gathered in appropriate containers. Year-round leash law.

Nags Head

Dogs are allowed on the beach year-round as long as they are restrained by a leash not exceeding 10 feet. All pet waste must be properly disposed of by owners.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Dogs are allowed on the beach year-round, if they are restrained with a leash 6 feet or less. Pets are not allowed on designated swim beaches or in buildings. Please clean up after your pet. Do not leave your pets unattended.
